Ekedeshik Cave
A cave in the Koytendag karst range of Lebap velayat, set within the Kugitang Nature Reserve alongside the famous Dinosaur Plateau trackways.
Quick Navigation
Overview
The Kugitang range holds a documented cave system of considerable extent, formed within uplifted ancient seabed limestone. The cave interiors are cool year-round, an immediate relief during the warm months when the surrounding countryside bakes, and the karst landscape above ground is shot through with springs, sinkholes, and narrow canyon cuts that reward careful exploration.
The reserve is also home to the Dinosaur Plateau - one of Central Asia's most remarkable natural sites, where Jurassic-era sauropod trackways have been preserved in rock. The trackways are documented and well-studied, and their scale is genuinely arresting: the footprints of animals that no longer exist, pressed into stone that was once soft mud at the edge of an ancient sea. Combining a cave visit with the Dinosaur Plateau makes for a full day of the kind of deep geological time that the Kugitang range seems to specialize in.
Lebap velayat as a whole remains one of Turkmenistan's least-visited regions by international tourists, which means the Kugitang reserve tends to have the particular atmosphere of a place not yet worn smooth by crowds. The approach from Turkmenabat is long, the terrain changes considerably as the road climbs toward the mountains, and the reserve itself rewards visitors who arrive with patience and curiosity rather than a checklist.
Highlights

- Experience the Kugitang range - a fragment of ancient seabed raised and shaped over millions of years
Best Time to Visit
April through June and September through October are the ideal months, with comfortable temperatures in the Kugitang foothills and clear conditions for mountain travel. The cave interior remains cool regardless of season, but the approach and surrounding nature reserve are most rewarding in spring when vegetation is green. July and August bring intense heat to Lebap velayat - temperatures frequently exceed 40°C (104°F) - though the cave itself provides a cool refuge. Winter is cold in the mountains and some roads can become challenging.
Getting There
The Kugitang Nature Reserve is in the far east of Lebap velayat, accessible from Turkmenabat, the provincial capital. Turkmenabat is connected to Ashgabat by domestic flights and by road. From Turkmenabat, reaching the reserve requires a substantial drive into the mountains. Our team handles all transport into the reserve, including vehicles suited to the mountain approach, and arranges the reserve access permits required for entry.
