The Darvaza Gas Crater - the "Door to Hell" - is Turkmenistan's most unforgettable sight: a 70-metre fiery pit that has burned without pause in the heart of the Karakum Desert for over half a century. Standing at its rim after dark, flames lighting the desert sky and the heat on your face, is the single image most travellers carry home from Turkmenistan.

Reaching the crater takes planning. It lies deep in the desert, several hours from Ashgabat or the Uzbek border, with no public transport and no facilities beyond the seasonal yurt camps nearby. That is why almost everyone visits Darvaza on an organised tour - with a driver who knows the desert tracks, a guide to handle borders and permits, and an overnight camp so you can watch the crater at sunset, under the stars, and again at dawn.

Our Darvaza tours range from a quick two-day dash from Khiva in Uzbekistan to longer journeys that pair the crater with Ashgabat's white-marble avenues, the Silk Road city of Merv, and the UNESCO mausoleums of Kunya-Urgench. Every itinerary below is run by our own licensed guides and private vehicles, with yurt accommodation at the crater and full visa support.
