Question 1

Do I need a visa to visit Turkmenistan?

Accepted Answer

Yes, in most cases. Since October 2026 tourist visas for Turkmenistan are issued electronically, as an e-Visa. When you book a tour with us, we apply for it for you.

Question 2

Is there an e-Visa for Turkmenistan, and do I still need an LOI?

Accepted Answer

Yes, there is, and no, you don't. Since 1 October 2026 Turkmenistan issues tourist visas electronically, and a separate Letter of Invitation (LOI) is no longer needed. We file your e-Visa application on the official eVISA portal of the State Migration Service, you pay the fee by card using a link sent to your email, and we send you the e-Visa as soon as it is issued.

Question 3

What is the Turkmenistan e-Visa?

Accepted Answer

It is a tourist visa issued electronically by the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan. It replaced the old procedure with a Letter of Invitation and an embassy visit. The application is filed by the inviting party, a licensed Turkmen tour operator, for a specific trip, so the e-Visa comes with a booked tour.

Question 4

What documents do I need for the e-Visa?

Accepted Answer

Three: a scan of your passport photo page (the passport must be valid for at least 6 months), a recent passport-style photo and our application form. Send them to your manager by email or messaging app.

Question 5

How early should I send my documents for the e-Visa?

Accepted Answer

As early as 6 months before your trip and no later than 3 weeks before it. Three weeks leave enough time for processing and, if needed, for replacing a document.

Question 6

How long does it take to get the e-Visa?

Accepted Answer

A standard e-Visa takes 9 business days and an express one 5. In calendar terms that's about two weeks for a standard visa and about one week for an express one.

Question 7

How much does the e-Visa cost, and how do I pay?

Accepted Answer

A standard e-Visa costs $40 for a single entry and $60 for a double entry; an express one costs $80 and $120. You pay the fee yourself by card, using a link sent to your email. Our visa support is included in the tour price.

Question 8

What do I show at the border?

Accepted Answer

Your passport and a printed copy of your e-Visa. Keep a copy on your phone as well, so you always have it at hand.

Question 9

What happens if my e-Visa is refused?

Accepted Answer

The visa fee is not refunded if the visa is refused. That's why we check every document before we submit it: the passport scan, the photo and the application form. If your application is refused, your manager will tell you what can be done.

Question 10

Can I exit Turkmenistan through a different border than I entered?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many of our routes enter from one country and leave for another, for example in from Iran and out to Uzbekistan. We plan the border crossings together with your route before we submit your e-Visa application, so agree on the route with us first.

Question 11

Can I extend my Turkmenistan visa once I am in the country?

Accepted Answer

Visa extensions are generally not possible for tourists. Plan your exact dates upfront. If your travel needs to be extended for emergency reasons, contact your tour operator immediately - they can liaise with the State Migration Service.

Question 12

Can I bring a drone to Turkmenistan?

Accepted Answer

No. Drones are not allowed for tourist use in Turkmenistan and may be confiscated at the border. Do not pack a drone in your luggage - the risk of detention or fines is real.

Question 13

Are there photography restrictions in Turkmenistan?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Photography is prohibited at airports, government buildings, presidential residences, military facilities, and some bazaars. Always ask your guide before taking photos in cities. Tourist sites such as Darvaza, ancient Merv, and Nisa are fine to photograph.

Question 14

Can I bring prescription medications into Turkmenistan?

Accepted Answer

Bring only the medications you genuinely need, in their original packaging, with a doctor's note (preferably with English translation). Avoid bringing codeine-based painkillers, sleeping pills, and anxiety medication unless absolutely necessary - these have been confiscated at borders. Always declare prescription medication.

Question 15

What are the customs limits for cigarettes and alcohol?

Accepted Answer

Tobacco is restricted: typically up to 2 sealed packs (40 cigarettes) plus 1 open pack with a maximum of 17 cigarettes. Larger amounts may be seized. Alcohol allowance is limited to a small personal quantity - check current rules with your operator before travel.

Question 16

What items must I declare on arrival in Turkmenistan?

Accepted Answer

You must declare cash over $10,000 USD, prescription medications, drones (which are not permitted), professional camera equipment, and any items intended for sale. Failure to declare can result in fines or confiscation.

Question 17

What currency is used in Turkmenistan?

Accepted Answer

The official currency is the Turkmen Manat (TMT). Foreign cash can be exchanged at banks and official exchange points, while card acceptance remains very limited.

Question 18

Can I use credit cards in Turkmenistan?

Accepted Answer

Only in a limited number of places, mainly major hotels and some upscale venues. For most day-to-day expenses, travelers should plan to use cash.

Question 19

Can I withdraw cash from ATMs in Turkmenistan?

Accepted Answer

ATM withdrawals are unreliable and most foreign cards do not work. Bring enough cash for the whole trip. Hotels and major venues may accept cards but only as a last resort.

Question 20

Is internet access available in Turkmenistan?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but it is often slow and restricted. Hotel Wi-Fi is available in many places, and some apps or websites may work intermittently or be blocked.

Question 21

Will my SIM card or eSIM work in Turkmenistan?

Accepted Answer

International roaming is limited and expensive. You can buy a local SIM card on arrival (passport required). eSIM data plans work in most places, though connectivity varies. Connection speeds in Turkmenistan are typically slower than other Central Asian countries.

Question 22

Which messaging apps work in Turkmenistan?

Accepted Answer

Most messaging apps and social networks are restricted in Turkmenistan, including WhatsApp and Telegram. During the tour, stay in touch through your guide and our office phone. Let your family know in advance that you may be hard to reach.

What is the best time to visit Turkmenistan?

Accepted Answer

Spring from March to May and autumn from late August to mid November are usually the most comfortable seasons for travel. Summer is extremely hot, while winter is mild in the south and colder in the north.

Question 24

Can I take photos everywhere in Turkmenistan?

Accepted Answer

Question 25

Accepted Answer

Accepted Answer

Question 27

Is Turkmenistan a good destination for traveling with young children?

Accepted Answer

Spring and autumn are best for families - summer in Turkmenistan can reach +45–50°C in the desert and is challenging for small children. Tour itineraries are flexible and can be adjusted to family pace; talk to your operator about tailored options.

Question 28

Can I travel independently in Turkmenistan without booking a tour?

Accepted Answer

Accepted Answer

Question 31

How far in advance should I start planning a trip to Turkmenistan?

Accepted Answer

Ideally, start planning at least 30 days in advance. Send us your e-Visa documents no later than 3 weeks before the trip; the rest of the time goes into confirming the itinerary and booking hotels.
