    Spring: The Best Season

    March – May

Spring is widely considered the best time to visit Turkmenistan. Temperatures are pleasant (15–30°C), nature is blooming, and the iconic Darvaza Gas Crater is best experienced in the cool evenings.

    • Ideal for desert tours — comfortable temperatures day and night
    • Silk Road cities (Merv, Köneürgenç) are best explored in spring
    • Nowruz celebrations in March offer unique cultural experiences
    • Wildflowers bloom across the Kopetdag foothills

    Summer: Hot but Rewarding

    June – August

Summer brings extreme heat, especially in the Karakum Desert where temperatures regularly exceed 45°C. This is the most challenging season, but also the least crowded.

Travel in early morning and late evening. Stay hydrated and wear light, breathable clothing.

    • Fewer tourists — enjoy popular sites without crowds
    • Lowest prices on tours and accommodation
    • Ashgabat's white marble architecture gleams in summer light
    • Mountain villages like Nohur are refreshingly cooler

    Autumn: Second Best Season

    September – November

Autumn is the second-best time to visit. After the summer heat breaks, temperatures drop to a comfortable 15–28°C, and skies remain clear and deeply blue.

    • Excellent hiking conditions in the Kopetdag mountains
    • Pomegranate and grape harvests in rural villages
    • Darvaza Gas Crater visits are spectacular under October skies
    • Golden light and clear skies — ideal for photography

    Winter: Quiet Season

    December – February

Winter is cold (−5 to +10°C), especially at night. Snow occasionally falls in the Kopetdag mountains and even in Ashgabat. However, winter has its own quiet appeal.

    Advantages

    • Almost no tourists — experience Turkmenistan authentically
    • Stunning snowy landscapes in the Kopetdag mountains
    • Clear desert skies ideal for stargazing at Darvaza

    Considerations

    • Desert nights can drop below −10°C
    • Some rural roads may be affected by weather
