Awaza Seaside Resort
Turkmenistan's only Caspian resort district - a purpose-built coastal zone with beaches, hotels, and waterparks on the shores of the world's largest lake.
Quick Navigation
Overview
The resort zone spans several kilometers of developed shoreline. Hotels in shapes that range from ambitious to frankly surreal rise against the sea horizon. There are waterparks, yacht clubs, a ferris wheel, promenades, and long sandy beaches where Caspian breezes keep the temperature bearable when the desert interior is an unlivable furnace. For a country whose population has long been separated from the sea by vast desert distances, Awaza represents a deliberate seaside destination willed into existence on the western coast.
The Caspian itself is worth noting - it is the world's largest inland body of water, technically a lake but behaving in every practical sense like a sea, complete with waves and a horizon that swallows ships. Sturgeon once made this water world-famous; the area has been a fishing and trade hub for centuries. Awaza as a resort is recent, but the coast's human history is long.
What makes a visit here interesting beyond the obvious is the contrast it creates with everything else Turkmenistan offers. After days of ancient ruins and desert monuments, arriving somewhere designed for relaxation - somewhere with a beach and a functioning waterslide - carries its own peculiar charm. It is the place where Turkmen families come on summer holiday, and that local ordinariness gives it a texture that purely tourist-facing attractions sometimes lack.
Come for the pleasure of swimming on Turkmenistan's only Caspian resort coast, stay for the sunsets over water that turn the sea copper and gold - a color palette it shares with no other lake on earth.

Best Time to Visit
June through early September is peak Awaza season, with Caspian water temperatures warm enough for swimming and long sunny days that suit beach holidays. July and August are the warmest months, though sea breezes keep the coastal zone noticeably cooler than the desert interior. April, May, and October offer quieter, mild conditions ideal for walking the promenades and exploring the coastline without summer crowds. Winter on the Caspian coast turns cool and sometimes grey, with winds off the water making beach visits impractical.
Getting There
Awaza is located on the Caspian coast near Turkmenbashi in Balkan velayat, in western Turkmenistan. The most convenient access is by domestic flight from Ashgabat to Turkmenbashi Airport, followed by a short transfer to the resort zone. Overland travel from Ashgabat crosses several hundred kilometers of Karakum Desert on paved highway - a drive of several hours. Our tours handle all transfers and accommodation logistics.
