Ashgabat, Darvaza & Kunya Urgench: Capital, Crater & Caravanserai
Four days from Ashgabat to the Uzbek border: marble city landmarks, Kopetdag mountain villages, the burning Darvaza Crater, and Koneurgench's UNESCO monuments.

Overview
This four-day guided tour crosses Turkmenistan from south to north, beginning at Ashgabat International Airport and concluding at the Shavat border crossing into Uzbekistan. It is one of the most logistically efficient ways to move between the two countries while experiencing Turkmenistan's most significant cultural, natural, and archaeological sites. The Darvaza Gas Crater tour component - an overnight in traditional desert yurts beside the burning crater in the Karakum Desert - is the centerpiece of the journey. Few travel experiences in Central Asia are as visually arresting. The route earns it: Day 1 covers Ashgabat's white-marble cityscape and Old Nissa's Parthian ruins (UNESCO World Heritage), Day 2 ventures into the Kopetdag Mountains for Kow-Ata's underground thermal lake and the traditional village of Nokhur, and Day 3 passes through Ashgabat's Altyn Asyr Oriental Bazaar before the desert drive north to Darvaza. Day 4 delivers the tour's second UNESCO site: Old Koneurgench, the former Khorezm Empire capital whose medieval monuments - including the Kutlug Timur Minaret, the tallest surviving minaret from the medieval Islamic world - are among the most important and least-visited heritage sites in all of Central Asia. Travelers asking how many days to spend in Turkmenistan on a transit itinerary between Uzbekistan and Ashgabat will find this tour covers the essential highlights without sacrificing depth. A licensed English-speaking guide accompanies the entire journey, with all border formalities, camp logistics, and site permits arranged in advance. Optimal travel seasons are April through May and September through October.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
After settling in and breakfast, the morning moves through the city's set pieces: the Alem Ferris Wheel (a world record holder for its enclosed cabin), the exterior of the Olympic Village, and the National Museum, where the collection charts Turkmenistan from the earliest Bronze Age settlements through the Parthian, Seljuk, and Soviet periods.
Afternoon: The Arch of Neutrality, the Independence Monument, and then Old Nissa - a Parthian royal fortress two thousand years old on the city's western edge, designated UNESCO World Heritage for its exceptional testimony to the Parthian Empire. The Constitution Monument closes the day as the light goes warm.
