Merv, Darvaza & Kunya Urgench: 4-Day Silk Road Crossing
Four days traversing Turkmenistan east to north - from the Silk Road ruins of Merv to Ashgabat's marble boulevards, the Darvaza crater, and Koneurgench's Khorezm monuments.
Overview
This four-day Turkmenistan tour from east to north is one of the most content-rich overland routes in Central Asia, threading three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Darvaza Gas Crater, and two international border crossings into a single coherent journey. The route enters at the Farap border crossing from Uzbekistan and exits at the Dashoguz/Shavat crossing back into Uzbekistan - making it ideal for travelers working a broader Central Asia itinerary who want to traverse, not merely visit, Turkmenistan. Day one anchors the tour at Ancient Merv, the UNESCO-listed complex outside Mary that preserves five successive city-states including the Seljuk capital that medieval geographers ranked among the world's greatest cities. The Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum, Erk-Kala, and Gyaur-Kala alone justify the stop. Day two continues to Ashgabat for the capital's monumental city tour and a visit to Old Nissa, the Parthian fortress and Arsacid royal residence on the city's western edge - the second UNESCO site on the route. Day three adds the Russian Bazaar before the long drive north through the Karakum to the Darvaza Gas Crater, where a traditional yurt camp and barbecue dinner are set against a 60-meter burning pit that has not extinguished since the Soviet era. The final morning brings Konye-Urgench - the third UNESCO site - with the 60-meter Kutlug Timur Minaret and the domed Turabek Hanum Mausoleum before the crossing into Uzbekistan. How many days do you need in Turkmenistan? Four days on this east-to-north route covers the country's essential historical register without a wasted hour. A licensed English-speaking guide, private vehicle, all entrance fees, and desert camp accommodation are included throughout.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Afternoon: Ancient Merv (UNESCO), and no amount of preparation fully readies you for its scale. The complex contains the remains of five successive city-states built across four millennia. Erk-Kala is the oldest, its circular earthen walls still ten meters high in places; Gyaur-Kala's perimeter once enclosed a city of hundreds of thousands.
The Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum is the emotional anchor: a double-domed 12th-century structure commissioned by the Seljuk ruler who made Great Merv the capital of an empire stretching from Anatolia to Afghanistan. Walking its interior, the acoustics still carry, and the worn brick underfoot has a weight that photographs cannot reproduce.
Evening: Dinner in Mary.
