Darvaza, Ashgabat & Merv: Turkmenistan Loop from Uzbekistan
Five days crossing Turkmenistan from the Uzbek border to the Silk Road ruins of Merv - via the burning Darvaza Crater and white-marble Ashgabat.

Overview
This five-day Turkmenistan Silk Road tour crosses the country from the Uzbek border at Shavat to the Farap crossing in the east, covering four of Turkmenistan's most historically and naturally significant regions in a single coherent journey. The route is designed for travelers who want genuine depth rather than a highlight reel - each day lands in a different environment, from the burning sands of the Karakum to the Kopetdag mountain foothills to the vast archaeological landscape of Ancient Merv. The tour opens with the Darvaza Gas Crater on the first evening - a 60-meter pit that has burned continuously since a Soviet drilling accident, known across Central Asia as the Gates of Hell. Camping beside it overnight is an experience that very few international travelers have had. From Darvaza, the route continues south into Ashgabat, Turkmenistan's white-marble capital, where a full afternoon covers Old Nissa (a UNESCO-listed Parthian fortress), the National Museum, and the city's monumental civic architecture. A full day in the Kopetdag Mountains adds Kow-Ata's warm underground lake, the traditional village of Nokhur, the Geokdepe Mosque, and a visit to a private Akhalteke horse stable - among the rarest equestrian encounters in Central Asia. The tour closes at Ancient Merv, the UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once among the largest cities in the medieval world and a defining node of the historic Silk Road. With a licensed English-speaking guide throughout, all border crossing assistance, desert camp accommodation, and full board across most days, this is the most complete short-form Turkmenistan itinerary for travelers entering from or departing to Uzbekistan. Best experienced in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October) when temperatures across the Karakum are manageable.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Afternoon: South of Dashoguz, the desert begins in earnest. For the next six hours the Karakum does exactly what it promises: sand, scrubland, silence, and a sky that grows enormous as afternoon fades.
Evening: The sulfur reaches you before the crater does. At dusk, the ground simply opens - a 60-meter burning pit, roaring softly, orange against the darkening blue. The Darvaza Gas Crater has burned since a Soviet geological drilling accident, and there is still no plan to extinguish it. Dinner is a barbecue under the open sky, the crater glowing two hundred meters away, the stars overhead dense enough to cast shadows.
